چکیده

Introduction: Conventional magnetic resonance imaging in the Spinal Cord (SC) is often insufficient to diagnose, asses the stage and progression of ailments, and correlate clinical observations to imaging. During the last years, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) has become the preferred tool to analyze white matter properties in SC by showing a displacement of the white matter tracts at the level of the pathological lesion. In this abstract a new approach to quantitatively assess SC tissue is proposed. This approach is based in the measurement of Radial Fractional Anisotropy Mean (RFAM) and Angular Fractional Anisotropy Mean (AFAM) values which depict the changes in fractional anisotropy mean values as a function of the distance from the centre of the SC and the angle respectively.

Radial Fractional Anisotropy Mean and Radial Mean Diffusivity Mean: New metric in the Study of Spinal Cord Tissue

Introduction: Conventional magnetic resonance imaging in the Spinal Cord (SC) is often insufficient to diagnose and assess the stage and progression of ailments. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and its ability to delineate the motion of water molecules and subsequently white matter tracts has become more important during the last years. Nevertheless, due to the lack of resolution and the poor si...

Diagnostic potential of the diffusion tensor tractography with fractional anisotropy in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical spondylotic and posttraumatic myelopathy

BACKGROUND Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based methodology widely used for the evaluation of microstructural integrity of the central nervous system (CNS), particularly of brain white matter fibers and bundles. METHODS The most common parameters evaluated in a DTI study are the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). Combining FA and MD ana...

Quantitative MRI of the spinal cord and brain in adrenomyeloneuropathy: in vivo assessment of structural changes.

Adrenomyeloneuropathy is the late-onset form of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, and is considered the most frequent metabolic hereditary spastic paraplegia. In adrenomyeloneuropathy the spinal cord is the main site of pathology. Differently from quantitative magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, little is known about the feasibility and utility of advanced neuroimaging in quantifying the spin...

Improved in vivo diffusion tensor imaging of human cervical spinal cord

We describe a cardiac gated high in-plane resolution axial human cervical spinal cord diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) protocol. Multiple steps were taken to optimize both image acquisition and image processing. The former includes slice-by-slice cardiac triggering and individually tiltable slices. The latter includes (i) iterative 2D retrospective motion correction, (ii) image intensity outlier ...

In vivo DTI of the healthy and injured cat spinal cord at high spatial and angular resolution

Spinal cord diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is challenging in many ways: the small size of the cord, physiological motion and susceptibility artifacts pose daunting obstacles to the acquisition of high-quality data. Here, we present DTI results computed from in vivo studies of the healthy and injured spinal cord of five cats. Both high spatial (1.1 mm3) and angular (55 directions) resolutions we...
